While the term “Holland” is often used interchangeably with the Netherlands, it’s important to note that the country consists of twelve provinces, two of which are North Holland and South Holland.

Our journey commences in Centrum, the nucleus of Amsterdam. This historic district encapsulates the essence of the city’s heritage. Here, you’ll encounter the Royal Palace, Dam Square, and the intriguing Red Light District.

The Anne Frank House is also located in this neighborhood, so if you missed it in Centrum, you can catch it here. Don’t forget to explore the hidden courtyards (hofjes) that provide a glimpse into the city’s history. De Pijp: Hip and Bustling

Venturing south from Centrum we have De Pijp (pronounced: “De Pipe”).

De Pijp emerges as a vibrant and eclectic neighborhood. This trendy area is bustling with energy and a diverse mix of cultures. The Albert Cuyp Market is a must-visit for street food and shopping, offering everything from Dutch cheese to international cuisine.

De Pijp is also home to the Heineken Experience, where you can learn about the history of this famous beer brand. It’s a worthwhile visit even if you’re not a beer enthusiast.

Take a leisurely stroll through the serene Sarphatipark and indulge in Dutch herring or bitterballen at one of the canal-side eateries.

Oud-West: Local Vibes and Hidden Treasures

Continuing westward, we come to Oud-West, a lesser-known gem that’s perfect for travelers seeking a more local experience. This area is a delightful mix of cultures and has a growing reputation for its food scene. Head to the Foodhallen, an indoor food market with a variety of gourmet stalls serving global cuisine.

Oud-West also lays claim to Vondelpark, Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park. Rent a bike and enjoy a leisurely ride through this green oasis. Vondelpark is a MUST SEE spot, especially during the summer months.

Crossing over to the eastern part of Amsterdam, we arrive at Oost (pronounced: “oh-st”)

Cultural enthusiasts will appreciate the Tropenmuseum, where the city’s colonial history and cultural diversity come to life. Oost also lays claim to the quiet and serene Oosterpark. Noord: Up and coming hidden gem

Lastly, we set sail across the IJ River (pronounced “eye”), to the northern part of Amsterdam. Noord is an up-and-coming neighborhood is a testament to Amsterdam’s ability to reinvent itself, showcasing modern architecture and artistic innovation.

The EYE Film Institute offers a unique cinematic experience, while the A’DAM Lookout provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city! Exploring the quaint villages of Noord, including Durgerdam and Ransdorp, grants a glimpse into rural Amsterdam and offers a refreshing break from the urban hustle.
